3D - Sensitive And Critical Periods In Psychological Development 🌱 Flashcards
What are sensitive periods?
A period during development where the effects of experience on development are particularly strong. Periods of times where learning is optimised however not necessarily exclusive to that time.
How does neuroplasticity connect with sensitive periods?
learning is easiest and efficient during sensitive periods because these periods are associated with heightened neuroplasticity in the brain, making the brains ability to change as a result of experience particularly strong and rapid during these times.
What is imprinting?
When a newborn animal forms an attachment to the first thing that it sees following birth or hatching
What are critical periods?
A specific period during development where the individual is most vulnerable to the absence of an environmental stimuli or experience. These periods tend to be more limited than sensitive periods and require more stimulation otherwise the individual will never gain the abilities they should’ve gained in that period.
