6.8 Fixed DC Systems - 6.8 Fixed DC Systems Flashcards
Installed CO2 Systems
Found in auxiliary spaces and lockers that requires protection of flammables
- Paint lockers
- Paint mix and issue rooms
- Flammable liquid storerooms
- Flammable compressed-gas cylinder storerooms
- GTM/GTG modules
Halon 1301 System
Protects against “B” fires
Actuators are installed inside and outside the space
Time delays:
- 60 sec (manned)
- 30 sec (unmanned)
Halon safety precautions
SCBA is required
Gas Free engineering procedures must be conducted
Lethal products of Halon:
-HCN
-HF
-HBr
Heptafluoropropane (HFP)
A colorless, odorless and electrically non-conducting liquefied compressed gas which leaves no residue
Replaces Halon 1301 on some newer ships
Water Mist System
Extinguishes the fire by flash cooling the space
The discharge rate for high-pressure water mist is 0.003GPM
Magazine Sprinker Systems
Automatic dry-type
Manual dry-type
Automatic wet-type
Vertical Launch Deluge System
Dry-type sprinkling system
Applies water directly to a missile when a restrained fire or over-temperature occurs
Gaylord Hood
Blowers serving the ventilators are shut off
Hinged grease-extracting baffles close at the air inlet
Fire-smothering water spray is released into the ventilator interior
Power is secured to the Gaylord Hood fire damper and the exhaust ventilation in the galley area
Aqueous Potassium Carbonate System (APC)
Used in conjunction with the Gaylord Hood System
Discharges APC automatically and remotely
Freshwater Hose Reels
Used to combat fires in vital electronic spaces
50 feet black hose, ľin diameter, adjustable Vari-nozzle
Uses potable water so as not to foul electronics
Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF)
Stations provide a solution of 6% AFFF concentrate and 94% seawater at a flow rate of 60 to 1,000GPM to installed AFFF Systems
Locations where AFFF Systems are installed
Hangers
Tank decks
Well decks
Vehicle cargo holds
Weapon elevator pits
Fuel pump rooms
AFFF Bilge Sprinkler System
Installed throughout the machinery spaces
Used to create a vapor barrier if flammable liquid spills in the bilges
Halon 1301 is used in…
- Main machinery and engine rooms
- Auxiliary machinery and boiler rooms
- Ship service or emergency generator rooms
- Main propulsion or generator engine modules
- Recovery, Assist, Secure, and Traverse (RAST) machinery rooms
- Tactical Towed Array Sonar (TACTAS) handling rooms
- Flammable liquids storage and issue rooms
