6.6 Populations and Sustainability Flashcards
What is a limiting factor ?
Environmental resource or constraint that limits population growth.
Slow growth on population growth curve ?
Small numbers of individuals that are initial present reproduce increasing total population.
What is rapid growth in population growth curve ?
As number of breeding individuals increase, the total population multiplies exponentially. No constraints act to limit population explosion.
What is stable state in population growth curve ?
Further population growth is prevented by external constraints.
What are abiotic factors ?
Non-living factors include temperature, light, pH, water or oxygen and humidity.
What are biotic factors ?
These livings factors include predators, disease and competition.
What is carrying capacity ?
Maximum population size than an environment can support.
What is immigration ?
Movement of individual organisms into a particular area increases population size.
What is emigration ?
Movement of individual organisms away from a particular areas decreases population size.
What is interspecific competition ?
Competition between different species.
What is intraspecific competition ?
Competition between members of the same species.
What are stages of predator-prey relationships ?
1 - Increase in prey population.
2 - Increased predator population
3 - reduced prey population
4- Reduced predator numbers
What is conservation ?
Maintenance of biodiversity through human action or management.
What is preservation ?
Protection of an area by restricting or banning human interference, so that ecosystem is kept in its original state.
Economic reasons for conservation ?
Provide resources that humans need to survive and to provide an income.
Social reasons for importance of conservation ?
Many people enjoy natural beauty of wild ecosystems as well as using them for activities which are beneficial to health by providing means of exercise and relaxation.
Ethical importance of conservation ?
All organisms have a right to exist and play a part in their ecosystem. Morality response for future generations to conserve the wide variety of existing natural ecosystems.
What is a sustainable resource ?
Renewable resource that is being economically exploited.
Aims of sustainability
Preserve environment, resources are available for future generations, less economically developed countries can exploit their natural resources and develop.
