Advantages of having engaged and motivated employees
- Greater productivity (likely to work harder and produce more)
- Promoting the business (likely to share experience)
- Trust between employer and employee (fewer absences)
Taylor’s theory
To motivate employees = paid based on amount of output they have produced
What is the name of Taylor’s approach
Piece-rate pay
Why does piece-rate pay motivate
High pay = higher productivity
Advantages of Taylor’s theory
May improve productivity which means a business can reduce its costs by employing fewer employees (R&S and training)
Disadvantages of Taylor’s theory
- Employees may rush during the production process leading to mistakes and errors
- Employees may become bored with completing the same task over and over again

What does Maslow’s hierarchy of needs show
5 categories which a business must cater to if its employees are to be as engaged and motivated as possible. You cannot move onto the next level until it is completed.
From bottom (Level 1) to the top (Level 5), what are the steps called.

Criticisms of Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs
- Not everyone has the same needs
- Our perception of wat is important at work will vary
- Not realistic that most employees will reach the top of the hierarchy
