6.3.3 Flashcards
Before covering a component with fabric what must be done?
It must be inspected, cleaned, protective treatment applied
What are the most suitable conditions for application of fabrics?
Room temperature of 16-21C and humidity of 70%
What are aircraft fabrics woven from?
Spun threads or yarns
What is Cotten tape referred as?
Egyptian tape
Where is cotton tape mostly used?
Areas of chafing or protection against stringing cords
What material is used for stringing?
Flax cordage
How should all materials used for fabric coverings be stored?
In a dry clean area away from direct sunlight at a temperature of 20C
When serious chafing is going to occur what can be used for protection?
A canvas or leather patch
How could seams never be made on fabric covering?
At a right angle to the direction of airflow
What are the two types of machined seams?
Ballon seam and lap seam
What is the balloon seam also known as?
The french fell
When should the ballon seam be used?
Always unless stated otherwise
After the seam is completed how should it be examined?
By a string electric light
When should the lap seam be used?
When specified by the manufacturer
What type of stitching is used for repairs?
Herring-bone stitch and boot stitch
What is the overhand stitch also known as?
Trailing edge stitch
What is the overhand stitch used for?
When a sudden change of section occurs (Trailing edges, wing tips, wing root ends)
If a thread for hand sewing has not been pre-waxed what should you do?
Give it a coating of beeswax
Where is dope generally used?
Attaching fabric to plywood
How many coats of tautening dope should be applied before fabric is applied?
Two
Where are drainage holes located?
Lower surface of components or moisture entrapment areas
What are the two types of eyelets (grommets)?
Drainage eyelets and shielded eyelets
Why is it important for access to be provided at specified positions in all fabric coverings?
For inspection or servicing purposes
What are the three types of inspection panels on fabric aircraft?
- woods frame
- zip panels
- spring panels
What is a woods frame?
When a doped celluloid sheet is placed onto a inspection hole cut out
What is the disadvantage of a woods frame?
A new patch has to reapplied every time
What is a zip panel?
When an inspection panel is in the shape of a vee has two zips on the sides
What is the spring panel?
An inspection panel that has a light alloy reversible dish for easy removal and refit
How is dope removed from a fabric?
By using thinners
What is the herringbone stitch also known as?
Ladder or baseball stitch
When should the herringbone stitch be used?
When the repair is in a straight line
Once the herringbone stitch is complete what should you do?
Place a 1inch wide serrated tape over it and then place a fabric patch on top
What type of wood is used in woods frame?
2mm plywood
If damage to a fabric is more than 4inches what is used?
An insertion repair patch
What thread is used for a boot stitch?
A single well waxed number 18 linen thread
What are the two portable types of fabric testers?
Seyboth and maule
Which portable fabric tester will break the surface of the fabric?
The seyboth tester
How should the fabric from a seyboth tester be repaired?
With a 50-75mm patch
Why should fabric testers not be done on double layer fabrics?
It will not give you an accurate measurement
How does a bursting strength test work?
Force is applied to a steel ball which is in contact with the fabric and the resulting force needed to break the fabric is the answer
How many test samples are sent to fabric laboratory tests?
Six warp and six weft
