6.3 Cells Study Guide Flashcards
Facilitated diffusion
Large particles pass through the cell membrane through the process of Facilitated diffusion. Proteins are on the cell membrane and act like a channel allowing particles through.
Simple Diffusion
Small particles pass through the cell membrane through the process of simple diffusion.
Osmosis
Osmosis is the movement of water molecules from a solution with a high concentration of water molecules to a solution with a lower concentration of water molecules.
Hypertonic
Having a higher osmotic pressure than a particular fluid, typically a body fluid or intracellular fluid.
Hypotonic
Having a lower osmotic pressure than a particular fluid, typically a body fluid or intracellular fluid.
Isotonic
Any external solution that has the same solute concentration and water concentration compared to body fluids.
Active transport
Type of Molecule moved: Glucose or amino acids
Movement over over concentration gradient:
Low to High
Requires energy and requires transport proteins.
Exocytosis
Takes the large molecules and releases them outside the cell.
Endocytosis
Is when the cell membrane takes the large particles and it moves into the cell.
