1.5 Study Guide Flashcards
Dependent Variable?
Variably affected by the change in the independent variable.
Independent Variable?
The variable the researcher changes.
Control Group?
Standard to which comparisons are made in an experiment.
Experimental group?
The group in an experiment that receives the variable being tested.
What graph axis does the Independent Variable go on?
The independent variable goes on the x-axis.
What graph axis does the dependent variable go on?
The dependent variable goes on the y-axis.
What is an example of an independent variable?
An independent variable could be someone’s age.
What’s an example of a Dependent Variable?
A dependent variable could be a test score.
How are dependent and independent variables different?
A dependent variable depends on the independent variable.
Identify the independent and dependent variables in this Hypothesis: Students who eat breakfast will preform better on a math exam than students who do not eat breakfast.
Independent variable: Breakfast or no breakfast
Dependent variable: Grade on exam
Identify the control and Experimental groups in this Hypothesis: Students who eat breakfast will preform better on a math exam than students who do not eat breakfast.
Control group: The Students and math exam
Experimental group: Breakfast or no breakfast and the grades.
Describe a graph error bars that would suggest/not suggest a statistically significant difference between groups.
If the range of error overlaps with a different bar by a lot then they might be closer then it says on the graph. If the range of the graph don’t overlap then on is probably actually larger then the other.
What type of graph do you use when the independent variable is grouped?
A bar graph
What is a standard deviation?
Statistic that measures the spread/range of a data group.
Wider the spread equals ______ the standard deviation?
Larger
