6.3 Flashcards
What is facilitated diffusion?
a type of passive transport that uses specialized proteins, such as channel proteins and carrier proteins, to help molecules move across a cell membrane
What is passive diffusion?
the process by which molecules diffuse from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration
What is osmosis?
the spontaneous passage or diffusion of water or other solvents through a semipermeable membrane
Define hypertonic
any external solution that has a high solute concentration and low water concentration compared to body fluids.
Define hypotonic
something that has a lesser degree of tone, tension, or tonicity
Define isotonic
any external solution that has the same solute concentration and water concentration compared to body fluids
What is active transport
an energy-driven process where membrane proteins transport molecules across cells
Define endocytosis
the process by which cells take in substances from outside of the cell by engulfing them in a vesicle
Define exocytosis
the process by which cells move materials from within the cell into the extracellular fluid
What way do molecules move in active transport?
from the lower concentration to the higher concentration
What way do molecules move in facilitated diffusion, simple diffusion, osmosis?
from the higher concentration to the lower concentration
Which way will water move?
water moves from the higher concentration to the lower concentration
