5.3- Transcription Flashcards
What is the purpose of transcription?
transcription takes DNA and makes a corresponding strand of RNA
What is the first step of transcription?
Initiation
What happens in the initiation step?
transcription factors bond to the promoter or the enhancer site and prepares the RNA polymerase to start copying gene
What is the second step of transcription?
elongation
What happens in elongation?
RNA polymerase frees itself. A 5’ protective cap is added. RNA polymerase copies DNA. Other protons splice out introns.
What is the third step of transcription?
termination
What happens in termination?
at the polyadenylation site , the termination sequence is recognized. A polyA tail is added to the end of the new RNA strand
What are some similarities in DNA and RNA?
- C-G
- A
- Phosphate Group
What are some differences between DNA and RNA?
DNA
- has ‘T’
- deoxyribose rugar
-double stranded
RNA
- has ‘u’
- ribose sugar
-single stranded
