4.1- Metabolism Flashcards
Enzyme Definition
a biological catalyst and is almost always a protein
Substrate Definition
a substance acted upon (as by an enzyme)
Active Site Definition
the specific region of an enzyme where a substrate binds and catalysis takes place or where chemical reaction occurs
Activation Energy Definition
the minimum energy required to cause a process (such as a chemical reaction) to occur
Describe a substrate concentration graph
- S-shaped curve
-sharp transition from low to high reaction rate over a narrow range of substrate concentrations
Describe a enzyme concentration graph
-depicts the changing concentration of enzymes across the bottom, x-axis of the graph, and depicts the rate of reaction across the side, y-axis of the graph
-similar to substrate concentration
Describe a temperature graph
-the graph starts off with a steep line, then it levels off a little, then it drops off.
-The cause of this is the optimum temperature is reached at the peak, before that it is too cold for molecules to move effectively, then after the optimum temperature the molecules move too fast to interact.
Describe a pH graph
-a bell- shaped curve, increasing from zero in the strong acid region up to a maximum value, and decreasing to zero to the strong alkaline region
Predict the enzyme reaction at the temperature of 80 degrees Celsius
The enzyme reaction rate will either be really low or none because the molecules will be moving too fast to react.
How will a temperature decrease effect the enzyme reaction rate
the enzyme reaction rate with decrease because the molecules will be moving too slow to interact a lot
Compare and contrast inhibition and activation of enzymes
Usually, the effect is to reduce the rate, and this is called inhibition. Sometimes the rate of enzyme reaction is raised, and this is called activation
