Theory, practice, and research in multicultural and diversity issues and social justice advocacy and their application to the preparation of counselors. Question prepared for the CAU faculty by Dr. Ng.

  • Demonstrate the ability to discuss various forms of oppression and social injustice from a multisystemic perspective.
  • Demonstrate the ability to articulate theory-based and evidence-based rationale/argument/support for diversity, equity, inclusion, justice in counseling practice and counselor preparation.
  • Demonstrate the ability to describe, discuss, and apply multicultural and social justice advocacy competencies and multicultural counseling theories and models (e.g., ADDRESSING model, racial identity development models, Cultural Context Model, feminist theory, critical race theory, psychology of liberation, antiracist pedagogies, and other social change theories) in counseling/clinical practice and counselor preparation.
  • Demonstrate the ability to articulate the impact of systemic racism on racial minoritized individuals and communities and the need for counselors to advocate on their behalf for equitable and culturally responsive services from an antiracist lens.
  • Demonstrate the ability to discuss the relevance of antiracism in the counseling practice and counselor preparation.
  • Demonstrate the ability to create counseling training and preparation materials that reflect social justice and diversity affirming perspectives.
  • Demonstrate the ability to critique and design social justice advocacy action plans based on theory, practice, and research.

Sample Question 1:

This question is designed to assess your competence in articulate the roles diversity, equity, and inclusion play in counseling practice.

Please respond to the following questions: **1.**Based on research and scholarly writings, discuss the rationale for requiring professional counselors to develop multicultural competence and cultural humility.  **2.**Describe three evidence-based strategies a professional counselor can use in their practice to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion. **3.**Discuss briefly a scenario a professional counselor may encounter clients whose values and beliefs are in conflict with those of the counselor. Discuss two strategies the counselor may use to navigate or address the situation.

Sample Question 2:

  1. Use Bronfenbrenner’s (1994) multisystemic, bioecological theory of human development to discuss the impact of systemic racism on the development of minoritized individuals in the United States. Use counseling case examples you have encountered in your practice to illustrate.
  2. Discuss how you can use Bronfenbrenner’s bioecological theory to develop a social justice advocacy program for a Boys and Girls club in an inner city that serves recent immigrant children from war-torn countries. Details how Bronfenbrenner’s theory can guide you in developing a holistic program.
