Professional issues and current trends in the counseling profession and their implications in the preparation of counselors. These issues include, but are not limited to, CACREP training standards, gatekeeping, federal laws, professional identity, online counseling and counselor education, and professional ethics. Question prepared for the CAU faculty by Dr. Ng and approved for the 2023 study guide by Dr. Field.

1.Demonstrate the ability to analyze and apply ACA Code of Ethics (2014) in general and Section F: Supervision, Training, and Teaching in particular.
2.Demonstrate the ability to analyze, and apply federal law and regulations such as FERPA, Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA), and ADAAA (2008), Title IX (1972), and HIPAA in the context of counselor preparation in academic settings.
3.Demonstrate the ability to use multisystemic framework to discuss and analyze historical and current trends in the practice of professional counseling and counselor preparation.
4. Demonstrate the ability to articulate components and significance of professional counseling identity.
5.Demonstrate the ability to discuss and analyze gatekeeping issues in counselor preparation and how diversity, equity, and inclusion issues may play a role in these issues.

Sample question:

This is aimed to assess your knowledge and competence in applying professional counseling code of ethics in counseling practice. Please address the following:

A. Discuss briefly the basic foundational principles underlying the latest ACA Code of Ethics.
B. Discuss briefly the importance/rationale for professional counselors to be familiar with the Code of Ethics that governs counseling practice.
C. Outline the steps that professional counselors need to follow to help them decide their course of action when they suspect that an ethical violation has taken place in their work setting. Specific ethical violation can be one that is committed by them or by fellow colleagues in the work setting. You may choose to address this part of the question based on a briefly described incident of violation, though it is not required.
