extrinsic characteristics
- attract to the activity and provide early motivation
- if used too much may undermine the value of the activity and therefore intrinsic motivation , players compete just for the reward.
- extrinsic rewards may create pressure on players to achieve and of they don’t get the reward motivation can be lost. The same pressure may also promote cheating
intrinsic characteristics
intrinsic motivation and rewards is better because it is more effective , stronger and longer lasting . They give more satisfaction, pride and a sense of control
What methods could be used by coaches to motivate performers
- offering rewards, praise and positive reinforcement early on , such as a ‘player of the week’ award
- make the task enjoyable and easier to allow success
- pointing out the health benefits of doing the task
- breaking the skill into parts , to allow success on each part
- pointing out role models to whom the performer can aspire to
- attributing success internally. telling the performer that a good result was because of them , they played well
- set achievable goals
-using feedback to inspire and correct errors
