What do the letters in GTPAL stand for?
G - Gravida T - Term births P - Preterm births A - Abortions L - Living children
Does the L count live births or children who are currently still alive?
Children currently still alive.
Document a patient that has been pregnant twice. She had one miscarriage and one full term child.

Woman’s 3rd pregnancy and currently 14 weeks. First baby born healthy at 40 weeks. Second baby born alive at 34 weeks. This third pregnancy recently ended in miscarriage at 14 weeks.

What is considered a term birth?
This is the number of times a woman has carried a pregnancy to at least 37 weeks gestation and delivered.
Using this GTPAL terminology how would you document a woman’s first pregnancy?

Does G include the current pregnancy?
Yes. Gravida is the number of times a woman has conceived, including any current pregnancy.
What is considered an abortion?
This is the number of times a woman has lost a pregnancy, whether it was elective or spontaneous (miscarriage), before 20 weeks gestation.
What is considered a preterm birth?
20-36.6 weeks
A woman is 39 weeks pregnant now and her first pregnancy she had a SAB (miscarriage) at 7 weeks. Second pregnancy she had healthy twins at 37 weeks. Third pregnancy she gave birth to a baby at 25 weeks that lived for 5 days.
