6. Endocrine System Part 2 Flashcards
What is homeostasis?
physiological consistency
What are tropic hormones?
hormones that regulate other hormones
What is the main form of feedback for the endocrine system?
negative feedback
What is the hypothalamus?
portion of the brain that controls the endocrine system by releasing “releasing and inhibitory factors”
What does the hypothalamus control?
anterior pituitary
What is the hypothalamic-pituitary control axis?
endocrine control system
What is the hypothalamic-pituitary portal system?
special minitature circulatory system is provided for efficient transport of releasing and inhibiting factors to the anterior pituitary
What are neuroendocrine cells?
neurons that secrete hormones into the bloodstream
What is the anterior pituitary gland?
normal endocrine gland controlled by the hypothalamus
What is the posterior pituitary gland?
composed of axons that descend from the hypothalamus and secretes ADH and oxytocin
What is the purpose of ADH?
causes kidneys to retain water
What is the purpose of oxytocin?
causes milk-let down for nursing and uterine contractions
What is cortisol?
hormone secreted by the adrenal cortex in response to ACTH from the pituitary that helps the body deal with stress
What is thyroid hormone?
produced from tyrosine in the thyroid gland that is produced in response to the thyroid stimulating hormones from the anterior pituitary gland
