4. Anatomical Organization of the Nervous System Part 3 Flashcards
What is the meninges?
protective sheath of the brain and spinal cord
What is the location of the adrenal glands?
one above each kidney
What nervous system is the adrenal medulla a part of?
sympathetic nervous system
What innervates the adrenal medulla?
sympathetic preganglionic neurons
What does the adrenal medulla do?
releases epinephrine when stimulated
What are the two portions of the adrenal glands?
medulla is the inner portion
cortex is the outer portion
What are the two types of neurons that make up the efferents of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems?
preganglionic
postganglionic
What are preganglionic neurons?
cell body is in the brainstem or the spinal cord
axon is sent to an autonomic ganglion outside of the spinal column
What neurotransmitter do all preganglionic neurons release?
acetylcholine
What are postganglionic neurons?
axon is sent to an effector (smooth muscle or gland)
What neurotransmitter do all parasympathetic postganglionic neurons release?
acetylcholine
What neurotransmitter do all sympathetic postganglionic neurons release?
norepinephrine
