5. Sensation and Perception Part 3 Flashcards
Where is opsin located and what is its function?
protein attached to rods and cones
change tertiary structure once light is absorbed
What is retinal?
molecule derived from vitamin A that is bound to each molecule of opsin
Where do rods and cones synapse?
bipolar cells
What neurotransmitter do rods and cones produce?
glutamate
What are the two types of bipolar cells?
on-center
off-center
What is reponsible for night vision?
rods
What is responsible for color vision?
cones
How many types of cones are there?
three; blue, red, and green light specific
What is emmetropia?
normal vision
What is myopia and what causes it?
nearsightedness caused by too much curvature of the lens causing light to focus in front of the retina
What is hyperopia and what causes it?
farsightedness caused by too little curvature of the lens causing light to focus behind the retina
What is presbyopia and what causes it?
inability to accommodate and focus caused by loss of flexibility in the lens due to aging
What is a humans primary sense?
vision
What is the visual cortex?
neurons fire in response to particular visual features
What is the feature detection theory?
explains why a certain area of the brain is activated when looking at different images
What is parallel processing?
many aspects of a visual stimulus are process simultaneously
What are absolute thresholds?
minimum stimulus intensity required to activate a sensory receptor 50% of the time
What are difference thresholds?
minimum noticeable differences between any two sensory stimuli 50% of the time
What is the signal detection theory?
attempts to predict how and when someone will detect the presence of a given sensory stimulus amidst all of the other stimuli in the background
What are the four possible outcomes for the signal detection theory?
hit
miss
false alarm
correct rejection
What is Gestalt Psychology?
believes the whole exceeds the sum of its parts
