6. Creativity, Innovation, Innovation Diffusion Flashcards
Creativity
creation of novel and useful ideas
Innovation
the whole process from idea generation to idea implementation (idea generation, idea evaluation, idea selection, idea implementation) Favourable evaluation + selection of the idea + successful implementation
Innovation diffusion
successful implementation of innovative products developed by others (recognition / evaluation of innovation, adoption of innovation, implementation of innovation) (It is a social process)
what does it mean to be novel/useful?
Novel – different from existing theories
Useful – basis of new technology
Component model of creativity (3)
- Expertise - Memory for factual knowledge, technical proficiency, and talents in the target work domain
- Intrinsic motivation – degree to which you enjoy your work
- Creative skill – personal tendency to pursue creativity (independence, risk-taking, self-discipline)
Is the model for creativity or general performance, somewhat tautological (redundant)
Dual-Pathway to creativity model
- Cognitive flexibility – use of broad and inclusive cognitive categories through flexible switching between categories and remote associations between them
- Cognitive persistence – systematic, effortful and in-depth exploration of only a few cognitive categories
Templates of creativity
based on concept of cognitive flexibility
Adopter’s Dilemma if adopt (1) if not (3)
• If don’t adopt
o Losing competitive advantage
• If adopt
o Ambiguity – both market and implementation uncertainty
o Cost – high cost
o Inertia of success – already doing well
Patent and why is it important?
gives owner legal right to intellectual property
Important as adopters inevitably imitate innovator’s products to some degree. Patent mainly deals with creativity. Often complicated as innovators are not original proposers of the idea.
