6. Anatomy Of The NS Flashcards
What is the hindbrain composed of?
Pons
Medulla Oblongata
Cerebellum
What is the cingulate gyrus?
Part of the cingulate cortex which is located within the brain. Can see in midsagittal section. Main body of limbic lobe.
Which structures are separated by the central sulcus?
The primary motor cortex (frontal lobe) and the primary somatosensory cortex (parietal lobe)
What is the lateral sulcus also known as?
What does it separate?
Sylvian fissure
The frontal and parietal lobes from temporal lobe
Where does the calcarine sulcus lie?
Within the occipital lobe
What is the distribution of white and grey matter in the brain?
Grey matter (cell bodies) along the outer edge of brain White matter (myelinated axons) within brain
What are the lobes of the cerebellum?
Anterior, posterior, flocculonodular
What accounts for the large SA of the cerebellum?
Folia, highly folded and compacted
What is the function of each component of the brain stem?
Midbrain - vision, hearing, motor control
Pons - pneumotaxic centre
Medulla - cardiac, resp., vasomotor, vomiting
What are the spinal nerves?
Cervical - C1-8
Thoracic - T1-12
Lumbar - L1-5
Sacral - S1-5
How are sensory and motor cell bodies arranged in the spinal cord?
Dorsal horn contains sensory cell bodies, ventral horn contains motor
How is white matter of the spinal cord arranged?
Dorsal columns (front of body) contain ascending sensory axons Ventral columns (back) contain descending axons Lateral funiculus contains ascending and descending
How are neurons classified?
Number of neuritis (axons and dendrites) Dendritic tree structure Axon length NT Connections
What are the two principal types of dendritic tree structure?
Pyramidal (spiny) - has one apical and many basal dendrites
Stellate (spiny or aspinous) - evenly spread dendrites
What are the two main types of axons?
Projection - long, Golgi type I
Local circuit - short, Golgi type II, interneurons
