20. Physical Activty And CVS Flashcards
What is the first stage in atherosclerosis?
Endothelial dysfunction - leukocyte adhesion and migration into the vessel intima. Due to a damaged endothelium
What is the second stage of atherosclerosis?
Fatty streak formation - Lipids begin to store in the wall. Platelets aggregate on endothelial surface, foam-cells formed inside the wall, immune response activated
What is the third stage of atherosclerosis?
Fibrous cap formation - macrophages accumulate in vessel wall and core becomes necrotic. Fibrous cap formed by SMC which increases pressure in vessel
What is the final stage of atherosclerosis?
Rupture of the plaque - fibrous cap thins and may rupture. Can coagulate into a thrombus and partially or fully block a vessel.
