5D Excretory System Flashcards
The Excretory System…
- Removes waste materials by filtering the blood.
- Regulates amount of water and ion concentrations.
Excretory System organs
Lungs, liver, kidneys, skin, and bladder
Urine
a mixture of water and solutes produced by the kidneys.
Kidneys
Filters the blood, reabsorbs useful substances and secrete unwanted ones, like nitrogenous wastes.
Nephrons
Helps with filtration, reabsorption, or secretion.
Bowman’s capsule
Filtration
Proximal convoluted tubule
reabsorbs ions, amino acids, water, glucose
secretes ammonia and toxins.
Loop of Henle
reabsorbs water
secretes urea.
Distal convoluted tubule
optional reabsorption of water and ions
secretes ion and toxins.
Collecting duct
optional reabsorption of water
secretes urea, ions, ammonia, and toxins.
Ureters
The tube where urine passes from the kidney to the bladder.
Bladder
receives urine from the kidney and stores it for excretion.
Urethra
The duct where urine is excreted from the bladder and out of the body.
