5B Plant Vascular Tissues Flashcards
Water is important in plants because…
Helps with photosynthesis
Transports nutrients and waste
Preventing plants from overheating
Right tonicity
Preventing damage from dehydration
The Xylem tissue are…
tubes that transport water and minerals in one direction from the roots to leaves
The Phloem tissue are…
tubes that transport glucose and nutrients around the plant in both directions.
Root hair increases what
Overall surface area for absorption
Roots absorb water from the soil through the root hair cells by what method
Diffusion (Osmosis)
What is Transpiration?
The movement of water in the xylem, exiting the plant via the stomata, passively
What does Transpiration help with?
Regulate heat and water balance.
Distribute nutrients.
Prevents wilting and cell damage.
What happens when water levels are low?
Plant seals off stomata to conserve water and transpiration doesn’t happen
Water is a what molecule?
Cohesive
What is Translocation?
the movement of nutrients in the phloem, created in the leaves to other areas of the plant.
Where does Translocation take place?
From a source to a sink
Factors affecting transpiration rate
Temperature, light, humidity, wind, and water availability
In an open stomata..
water can freely leave as can gases.
In a closed stomata…
gases cannot freely enter or leave, conserves water.
Define turgid in guard cells
When there is an abundance of water in the guard cell’s vacuole. Results in an open stomata where transpiration happens.
