2B Organelles Flashcards
Nucleus
Surrounded by double membrane. Role = confine genetic information (DNA). Nucleolus = site of ribosome production.
Ribosomes
Role is to assemble building blocks to make protein. Made of folded protein
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum
Coated with ribosomes. Synthesises and modifies protein
Smooth endoplasmic reticulum
Not coated with ribosomes. Produces lipids (fat) in a cell.
Golgi Apparatus
Sorts and packages protein.
Lysosome
Membrane-bound vesicle that disposes of cell waste and toxic. Contains digestive enzymes.
Mitochondria
Site of aerobic cellular respiration. Contains own DNA and ribosomes. Produces ATP
Chloroplast
Double membrane-bound organelle that is the site of photosynthesis Contains their own DNA and ribosomes.
Vacuole
Water and solute storage. Plays a role in maintaining plant cell structure.
Plasma Membrane
Selectively permeable barrier that controls what enters and exits the cell
Cell wall
Strengthens and builds structure in a plant cell
Cytoskeleton
Maintains shape and transports vesicles. Protein filament between nucleus and plasma membrane
Vesicle
Transports substances like protein
Cytosol
Jelly-like substance that covers all organelles expect the nucleus.
Comparative statement
Animal cells lack a cell wall and a chloroplast, whereas, plant cells have a cell wall and a chloroplast.
