5.9.3.2 Properties and effects of atmospheric pollutants Flashcards
What are the major problems caused by water?
None.
What are the major problems caused by carbon dioxide
Global warming and climate change
What are the properties and problems caused by carbon monoxide?
It is a toxic gas- colourless and odourless which therefore is hard to detect.
Can cause low blood oxygen (blood poisoning)
What are the main problems caused by sulphur dioxides/oxides (impurities in fuels)
Acid rain and respiratory issues.
What are the main problems caused by nitrogen oxides (N2 + O2 in air reacting in hot engines)
Smog created- respiratory issues (asthma) and acid rain.
What are the main problems caused by particulates (soot-carbon impurities/ unburnt hydrocarbons)
Global dimming, health/respiratory problems e.g asthma.
What is a solution to trap particulates, such as carbon
Install filters in diesel engines.
What are solutions to balancing and cancelling out carbon Dioxide levels in the atmosphere
Taxing emissions as well as forcing/ encouraging companies to plant trees (for every one which is cut down a new one is planted)
What is the solution to reducing amounts of fossil fuels being used
Using renewable resources such a solar, wind, HEP, bio energy and tidal energy. ‘Carbon neutral
(generating electricity)
As well as decreasing emissions
What are the solutions to carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere
Carbon capture + storage methods- removes/captures CO2 in the atmosphere converting into something less harmful
What is the solution to reducing sulphur oxide levels
Reducing emissions
