5.9.2.1 greenhouse gases Flashcards
What are greenhouse gases
They are a type of gas in the atmosphere which maintain temperatures high enough, on Earth, to support life.
Name 3 examples of greenhouse gas
Water vapour, carbo dioxide and methane.
What is the greenhouse effect
The trapping of the suns warmth in a planet’s lower atmosphere, due to the greater transparency of the atmosphere to visible radiation from the sun than to infrared radiation emitted from the planet’s surface.
What is short-wavelength radiation
Radiant energy produced by the sun with wavelengths ranging from infrared through visible to ultraviolet
What is long-wavelength radiation
Electromagnetic energy in the spectral band from roughly 3 to 100mm, this is where earth surface temperatures produce emissions.
