5.1.2.5 group 1 Flashcards
What are the metals in group 1 known as?
The alkali metals, on the top left of the periodic table.
What is the order of the metals within group 1, starting from top to bottom?
Hydrogen
Lithium
Sodium
Potassium
Rubidium
Caesium
Francium
Does the reactivity increase up or down the group 1 metals?
The reactivity increases down the group.
Why does reactivity increase down the group 1 metals?
Because the atoms get larger, meaning, the outer electron gets further from the nucleus.
What are the observations of lithium when placed in water?
Slight fizzing (gas released)
And moved on surface
What are the observations of sodium when placed in water?
Small spark- fizzed more than lithium,
Moving faster
What are the observations of potassium when placed in water?
Bigger explosion
Lilac flame
Fizzing even more and faster
What are the observations of rubidium when placed in water?
Huge explosion.
Why is the reactivity larger down group 1?
As you go down the group, the reactivity increases. Lithium is the least reactive and francium is the most. This is because the negative electron in the outer shell is further away from the positive nucleus, in potassium than lithium. Therefore, it is less attracted o the positive nucleus meaning it can be lost easily.
What is the formula associated with alkali metals?
Alkali metal + water = alkali metal hydroxide + hydrogen
State examples of the alkali formula?
Lithium + water = lithium hydroxide + hydrogen
Potassium + water = potassium hydroxide + hydrogen
How many electrons are in the outer shell of group 1 elements
