5.8.1.3 chromatography Flashcards
1
Q
What is a chromatography
A
A method to separate mixtures which then gives information to help identify certain substances
2
Q
Name the two phases in chromatography
A
Stationary phase- what’s not moving
Mobile phase- what is moving
3
Q
The ratio of the distance moved by a compound (centre of spot from origin) to the distance moved by the solvent can be expressed as its Rf value, what is the Rf formula?
A
Distance moved by substance /
Distance moved by solvent
4
Q
What is the difference between a compound and a pure compound
A
Compounds in a mixture may separate into different spots depending on the solvent but a pure compound will produce a single spot in all solvents
