5.7 Flashcards
Why do organisms need to respire?
- to obtain energy
e. g for active transport and metabolic reactions (outline of examples needed)
(mitochondria structure) what is the envelope
consists of the inner + outer membrane
(mitochondria structure) what is the intermembrane space
the space inside the envelope
(mitochondria structure) what are the cristae
inner highly-folded mitochondrial membrane
(mitochondria structure) what is the matrix
fluid-filled inner part of mitochondria
why does anaerobic respiration produce a much lower yield of ATP than aerobic respiration
because anaerobic respiration only includes one energy-releasing stage (glycolysis) which only produces 2 ATP per glucose molecule
-Krebs cycle and oxidative phosphorylation both require O2 so can’t occur
benefits of anaerobic respiration
- ethanol produced by Yeast cells, used by humans to make alcohol
- u can still produce a little ATP with no oxygen
How to calculate respiratory quotient
RQ = CO2 produced / O2 consumed
RQ>1 means
anaerobic respiration as more CO2 being produce than O2 being consumed
RQ=1 means
glucose
RQ<1 means
fatty acids + amino acids
difference in relative energy values of carbohydrates, lipids + proteins
most ➡️ least
lipids, proteins, carbohydrates
-because most ATP made in oxidative phosphorylation and H is required, lipid has most H, carbohydrates have leats amount
