5.2 Flashcards
DNA is replicated
5’ to 3’
What are parental strands?
the template for new dna to be synthesized
what is the leading strand?
During DNA replication the building of dna polymers is continuous
what is the lagging strand?
During DNA replication the builinding of dna polymers isn’t continuous
What needs to happen in order for the lagging strand to keep replicating?
New primers need to be laid.
What is helicase?
the enzyme that breaks the hydrogen bonds between the pases
What functional group is attached to the 3 carbon?
hydroxyl
What functional group is attached to the 5 carbon?
phosphate
What does primase do?
makes primers that tell polymerase where to begin
What does DNA polymerase do?
build DNA polymers and puts the nucleotides together
What does ligase do?
it attaches the DNA molecules
DNA cannot be replicated 3’ to 5’
