5. The Heart Flashcards
What are the 4 layers of heart tissue?
Pericardium, Epicardium, Myocardium, Endocardium
What are the 2 layers of pericardium?
Parietal = Fibrous outer sac
Visceral = Thick as coronary vessels to reduce friction
Describe Pericardium
Flattened layer of simple squamous resting on a thin layer of fibrous connective tissue.
What is the epicardium?
Underlying adipose connective tissue, blood vessels and nerves.
What is the Myocardium?
Cardiac myocytes joined by intercalated discs
How are Atrial myocytes different?
Smaller due to lower pressure and secrete ANP to lower blood pressure (endocrine)
Describe Perkinje fibres
Modified muscles cells with a large vacuole storing glycogen that appears magenta with PAS.
Describe Endocardium
Thin layer of fibrous connective tissue lying on simple squamous epithelium
SAN and AVN cells
Small, irregular myocytes adapted for impulse conduction with many blood and nerves.
Describe valves
Thick collagen fibres, occasional elastic covered by endothelial cells.
What accumulates in cardiac myocytes with age?
Perioxidation of lipids form yellow/brown lipofuscin pigment
What are Weibel-Palade bodies?
Endothelial cells in the heart control how blood clots form
