5. Low-fidelity Prototypes and Website Design Flashcards
What are the three specific areas of web design?
- Designing the structure 2. Helping users know where they are 3. Helping users navigate
Designing the structure
First determine: What is the website supposed to communicate? Is it rich in content? Is there a lot of interaction between users and the system? Need for structure what is happening on each page? What would be a good layout on each page?
Why make a site map?
To group information
How is a new design first designed?
With wireframe design. A new structure includes user tasks and a menu tree
Why is it good to use a grid when designing layout?
It helps structure and organising the content. It is also good for responsive design
Home page design
The front page of the web, unique from the rest of the site. It has two main goals; to tell the user where they are and tell the user what is on the page. Most sites have a logo, name, short introduction, access to most important tasks, some sort of navigation aids and search
What is below the fold?
Anything that is not immediately visible, what you can only see if you scroll down. Above the fold content is the most important content
Navigation aids: Three types of links
Internal links: sends reader from one webpage to another. Outbound links: sends reader to another website. Inbound links: other websites send their readers to the website
Navigational aids: Header and footer
Header: top level navigation. Footer: allows direct access to common content needs
Breadcrumbs
Category labels that appear on a webpage that enable users to peruse other pages without loosing track of where they have come from
Five acts when conducting lofi prodotype testing
- A friendly welcome 2. Open ended context questions about the user 3. Introduction to the prototype(s) 4. Detailed tasks to get the user reacting to the prototype 5. A quick debrief with questions to capture the users overarching thoughts and impressions
What are tasks?
Tasks are based on the user stories and are examples of how the software could be used
Two types of gathering information during lofi prototype testing
Asking the participants questions and observing what you think are problems in the design
Result table before and after task solving
Participants, Background, How the participant describes the pros and cons, What were the experiences of the participant and the results on the UX goals
Pros and cons table
A table that shows each participant and each task and all the pros and cons discovered
