5- Importance of nutrition in the ECC patient Flashcards
What is enteral nutrition
A form of nutrition that is delivered into the digestive system
What is the goal for enteral nutrition
Provide adequate caloric and nutrient intake via GIT to prevent adverse consequences of malnutrition
Which animals are considered ‘high risk’ in a nutritional assessment
Patients that have not consumed RER for 3-5days
Weight loss of 10% adults (5% neonates)
When working out RER what body mass should you use
Lean- not obese
What is parenteral nutrition
Nutrition given IV
T/F obese animals are at high risk for protein-calorie malnutrition
True- Critical illness leads to dramatic loss in lean muscle mass, as they break down muscle before they break down fat
What is the equation to work out RER
RER= 70 x BW ^0.75
If animal has prolonged anorexia, GI compromise mor metabolic derangements how do you approach feeding them
Start with 30-50% RER goal
Caloric goal should be gradually increased over 3-5 days
