4D - Alchohols definitions Flashcards
Primary alchohol
An achohol in which the OH group is attached to 2 or 3 hydrogens
OR
The carbon attached to the OH group is onto attached to one carbon atom
Alcohol
Homologous series with a functional group of -OH. Each successive menmber differs by -CH2
Secondary alcohol
An alcohol win which the OH group is attached to a carbon that is attached to 2 charbon chains and 1 hydrogen atom.
OR
The carbon attached to the OH group is attached to 2 other carbon chains.
Tertiary alcohol
An alcohol in which the OH group is attached to a carbon atom that is attached to 3 carbon atoms and no hydrogen atoms
Volatility
The ease at which a liquid turns into a gas. Volatility increases as boiling points decrease
Elimination reaction
The removal of a molecule from a saturated molecule to make an unsaturated molecule
Aldehyde
E.g?
E.g ethanal
Carboxylic acid
E.g?
Methanoic acid
Ketone
E.g?
E.g. Propanone
Carbonyl group
C=O
Reflux
The continual boiling and condensing of a reaction mixture back to the original container to ensure that the reaction takes place without the contents of the flask boiling dry
Oxidation
The loss of electrons or the increase in oxidation number
