2D - Bonding and Structure Flashcards
What is a small group of atoms bonded together by covalent bonds called?
Molecule
Octet rule?
There’s 8 electrons in the outer shell of electrons having formed all the covalent bonds
How to work out the number of covalent bonds an stom can form?
8 - group number
e.g. for Oxygen. It’s in group 6:
8 - 6 = 2
Oxygen can form 2 covalent bonds
How is a dative covalent bond written?
A → B
Why do metallic bonded molecules have high melting and boiling points?
There is astrong force of attraction between the metal ions and delocalised electrons. You require a large amount of energy to overcome this force.
Why are metallically bonded molecules good conductors of electricity when solid/molten?
They contain mobile charge carriers
Solid = Delocalised electrons act as mobile charge carriers
Liquid = Both positively charged metal ions and delocalised electrons can act as mobile charge carriers
Why are metallically bonded molecules malleable?
When you hit them, the atoms are free to move so they are displaced
Why are metallically bonded molecules ductile?
Metal ions can be displaced
