2B - Acids, bases & salts definitions Flashcards
1
Q
Acid (2x definitions)
A
- Substance that releases H+ ions in aqueous solution
- Proton donor
2
Q
Strong acid / Weak acid
A
Strong acid = fully dissociates in solution
Weak acid = Partially dissociates in solution
3
Q
Bases / Alkalis
A
Bases = Proton acceptors
Alkalis = A soluble base that releases OH- ions in water. Or a proton acceptor
4
Q
Salt
A
Salts are ionic compounds formed when the H+ ions in acids are replaced by metal ions or ammonium ions
5
Q
Spectator ion
A
Ions that don’t undergo any change.
They’re still in solution
