4910: C4 Nutrition Intervention Flashcards
clear liquid diet
diet consisting of liquids that contribute minimal residue to the gastrointestinal tract; includes fruit juices without pulp, carbonated sodas, broth, tea, coffee, water, popsicles, fruit juice, jell-o and liquid nutritional supplements. Limit to 24-48 hours
dysphagia
difficulty swallowing
evidence-based dietetics practice
dietetics practice in which systematically reviewed scientific evidence is used to make food and nutrition practice decisions.
full liquid diet
diet consisting of all beverages allowed on clear liquid diets with addition of milk, ice cream, yogurt, cream soups, and liquid nutritional supplements. May present problems for lactose intolerance.
hyperosmolar
having a higher osmolality than body fluids. (>300 mOsm/kg)
medical foods
foods administered under the supervision of a physician & intended for the specific dietary management of a disease for which distinctive nutritional requirements are established.
osmolality
number of water-attracting particles per wt of water in kilograms (mOsm/kg)
structured lipid
chemically modified triglyceride that allows change to the fatty acid composition. A combination of MCT & LCT.
nutrition prescription
Concisely states the pt’s/client’s individualized recommended dietary intake of energy &/or selected foods or nutrients bases on current reference standards & dietary guidelines & the pt’s/client’s health condition & nutrition diagnosis.
Medium-chain triglycerides (MCT)
8-10 carbon chain fatty acids from coconut oil. Are re-esterified to glycerol, & do not require lipase for digestion. Are absorbed directly into blood stream.
What two enzymes are necessary for the entry of LCFA into the mitochondria?
carnitine acyl transferase I (CAT I), & carnitine acyl transferase II (CAT II).
What are the goals of MNT
Maintain or restore health & nutritional status. Accommodate changes in digestion, absorption, or organ function. Provide nutrition therapy through nutrient content changes.
Bioactive substance
Food substances added to a food product or taken as a supplement that have a specific intended health purpose. ex. stanols
Dronabinol
A derivative of marijuana that may improve appetite, but it is not associated with wt gain.
3 appetite stimulating drugs.
Prednisone - Induces an increased sense of well-being and increased appetite. Megestrol acetate. Dronabinal
comprehensive nutrition education
Instruction or training intended to lead to in-depth nutrition-related knowledge &/or skills in given topics. ex CHO counting
Basic guidelines for providing nutrition education
Clearly communicate the purpose of the education. Prioritize the nutrition issues so that education is not complex. Education should be tailored to the pt.
Cognitive-Behavioral therapy
Uses the concept that behavior is learned and is directly related to both internal and external factors. Nutrition concealing and education should focus on interventions that will change environment and learning in order to facilitate behavior change.
Transtheoretical therapy
Uses specific steps to guide a client through development of health behaviors.
Social learning therapy
Allows the practitioner to understand the factors that predict & change behavior.
Behavior Modification therapy
from developmental psychology. Includes operant conditioning, imitation, & modeling to evaluate current behaviors & determine steps to initiate behavior change.
Planned behavior/ reasoned action therapy
Focus on a clients attitudes and beliefs that support or prevent behavior change
Person centered therapy
Uses the interventions that will allow the pt to develop individual skills to change his or her own behavior
Health Belief therapy
Identifies a client’s perceived ability to accomplish a behavior change.
