4.7 Flashcards
Explain how human factors (urbanisation, land-use change and deforestation) can affect flood hydrographs.
Urbanisation : increased surface run off meaning the discharge will be higher as there is more water is river.
Deforestation: less interception, more surface runoff, more water, more discharge
Explain how physical factors (geology, soil, slope, basin type,
antecedent conditions) can affect flood hydrographs.
Saturated soil increases surface run off and that rises discharge.
More precipitation, higher peak rainfall and more discharge making the hydrograph flashy
Explain how physical and human factors cause river flooding in the River Eden.
- H Deforestation
- P Steep relief - rain gets saturated quickly more impermeable rock
- H Urbanisation
- P saturated soil
- P impermeable rock
- H farming - cattle grazing
What are the effects of flooding on people and environment? What problems were caused?
Economic loss on housing and jobs, social loss families have no home, environmentally habitats are destroyed, economically, farmland is lost, environmentally cattle and vegetation is destroyed
