4.2 Physical / Human Processes Flashcards
Compare the weathering that is found in the uplands and lowlands
Lowland- warm summers, mild winters, light rain all year
Upland- cool summers, mild winters, heavy rain all year
Compare the soil/rock movement processes in the uplands and lowlands
Upland
Freeze thaw weathering causes scree slopes to form, very unstable as they are just rocks on a slope, land slides are common, heavy rain makes it more unstable
Lowland
Quite wet - slopes soak up water - heavy cliffs cant hold - slowest slope process
Compare misfit rivers and dry valleys (location, characteristics, formation)
Misfit river
Glaciers make U shaped valleys, later on smaller river flows through it, make it V - shaped, deposit slit and mud
Dry valleys
Flow underground, permeable, when ground unfreezes it goes over ground and when it freezes etc, makes a shape of river in valley
Explain how glaciers have affected both landscapes
Eroded valleys, created peaks, deposited morraines, eroded corries, created scarp and vale topography
Explain 2 ways humans have affected the Upland landscape
Farming
Clears out vegetation holding land together
Forestry
Cutting down trees, making land weak
Explain 2 ways humans have affected the Lowland landscape
Settlements
Buildings affected drainage pattern, rivers altered
Farming
Compare which landscape (up/low) have been affected more by humans
Lowland - more settlements are built there and farming is put in lowland too. Settlements altered rivers which is more major than other human activity in the upland areas.
