Chicago restaurants & protested about segregation on transport.
Involvement in Freedom Rides in 1961 - what is and what was it to create ?
White and black students - to test interstate travel where segregation had been declared unconstitutional.
To create a crisis so that the Federal government would have to intervene and ensure the law was upheld
(so that would force Fed Gov to enforce the SC decision (1960 Boyton v Virginia = dec racial seg on interstate buses uncon) )
. = Knew rides would lead to white backlash and violence.

Bus attacked and burned in Alabama. Other Core members attacked and beaten in Birmingham, and Jackson. = media attention = reported on by national press, causing uproar outside the south.
Evidence of state authorities allowing the violence and beatings.
November 1961 – Attorney General (R Kennedy) enforced S Court rulings = importance of federal intervention.

The federal interstate commerce commission and the US justice department under pres John F Kennedy bro - Robert F Kennedy issued orders to enforce integration on interstate buses
= effective from 1 Nov 1961 = all interstate buses and interstate facilities, such as waiting rooms, had to be racially integrated
