Q

what is setting ?

A

In works of narrative (especially fictional), the literary element setting includes the historical moment in time and geographic location in which a story takes place, and helps initiate the main backdrop and mood for a story.

The novel takes place in an unnamed futuristic city sometime in the 24th century. The atmosphere is fantastic, for technology has transformed society into a land of virtual reality and ultra- futurism. Television is totally interactive. Giant crematoriums collect and dispose of bodies in a monstrous, helicopter-borne contraption known as the Big Flue. Doors are programmed to announce visitors before they even arrive. Books are illegal, as is any true exercise of thought. Mankind has become lazy and stupid because of the excesses of technology. In fact, the people no longer know how to do simple things because some machine has been designed to do everything.

Q

What is the concept of the phoenix ?

A

The Phoenix is a symbol of rebirth, such as rising out of the ashes of a cast off life, to live again, renewed, reborn. It is a symbol for the future of the resistance or the book people that Montag joins at the end of the story. It foreshadows a rebirth of the society, providing a sense of hope that the current society, with its fascination for burning books and eliminating diversity of opinion, will be cleansed through the use of fire.

“By ending the book in a fire storm of bombs, there is the sense that this old society of conformity will die and a new one will be born out of the ashes, like the mythical phoenix to which Granger refers. “A time to break down, and a time to build up. Yes. A time to keep silence, and a time to speak,” Montag thinks as the book people move up the river at the end of the story.”

And, as the Phoenix rises out of the ashes, symbolically representing a new life, cleansed of the past, to live once more, so too is the hope of the rebels who have secretly memorized books to keep them alive.

The Phoenix is a symbol of change and transformation and this is particularly true for Guy Montag, who experiences his own transformation in the book. So through Guy Montag, and the rebels, the Phoenix represents the cycles in nature, meaning that out of the current society, the events of the moment, a new cycle of life will emerge, that is history, all societies go through cycles.

Q

What is the sieve and the sand ?

A

potcfansyd answered 6 years ago
The “Sieve and the Sand” refers to two incidents: one from Montag’s childhood and one from the present. In the incident from his childhood, a cousin challenged Guy Montag to fill a sieve with sand in exchange for a dime. Of course, the more sand that the child Montag put into the sieve, the more sand fell through the holes in the sieve. This frustrated Guy, causing him to cry. The other incident involves Montag’s attempts to memorize. He is trying to commit to memory the Book of Ecclesiastes from the Bible, but the jingle from the advertisement for Denham’s Dentrifice that keeps playing while Montag is on the train is interfering and the words to Ecclesiastes fall through his memory just like the sand went through the sieve all those years ago. Just as he was as a child, Guy Montag is frustrated at his inability to hang onto the words he’s trying to memorize. Guy’s modern world counts on this inability to concentrate. This world he lives in without books has encouraged people to live for the immediate moment; it’s a world of sound bites and expediency. By filling every place with mindless sound such as the advertisement jingle, people can’t concentrate and do any serious thinking. If people can’t think, they are much more easily controlled. This is just where society, and the government in the book, want people. By banning books, people’s minds have been turned into sieves unable to hold thought.

What is the concept of Job in Fahrenheit 451 ?

A

One is in “The Sieve and the Sand” when Faber reads from the book of Job. This book of the Old Testament is the story of Job - who is the victim of a dispute between God and Satan, to see if this human, when put through as much difficulty as Satan can manage - will remain faithful to God. Faber encourages Montag to continue doing what he thinks is right, despite the difficulty. In the end, Job does remain faithful - and is greatly rewarded as a result. The unspoken connection here is that Faber believes Montag will feel rewarded in the end.

A

noun
the avoidance, often considered as taken to extremes, of forms of expression or action that are perceived to exclude, marginalize, or insult groups of people who are socially disadvantaged or discriminated against.
Another theme of Fahrenheit 451 is that hypersensitivity to political correctness can cause censorship and dilutes our rich literary heritage. Beatty, the fire chief, conveys this message in no uncertain terms during his lecture to Montag, stating that “a book is a loaded gun in the house next door” and should be burned because it causes people to judge one another.

A

Captain Beatty is the captain of Montag’s fire department and also the antagonist of the story. Although he is himself extremely well-read, he hates books and people who insist on reading them. He is cunning and so perceptive that he appears to read Montag’s thoughts. Beatty is a ruond/complex character, because he is not what he appears to be at first sight; He is full of contradictions. He demonstrates vast literary knowledge in his arguments against the presence of books in society. Beatty often antagonistically lectures Montag, trying to prevent him from succumbing to the appeal of books. Beatty is CRUEL, RATIONAL and a CONFORMIST.

21
Q

Who is Granger ?

A

23
Q

Who is Faber ?

A

Faber is a retired English professor whom Montag met in a park long ago. He still possesses a few precious books and desires to have more. He would not speak out against book burning when they still could have stopped it. Faber feels it is safer to live discreetly rather than protest or attempt to change the world. He tries to help Montag think independently and at other times he tries to dominate him. Similarly, he can be cowardly and heroic by turns. He blames himself for being a coward, but he later on shows great courage in his acts.

24
Q

Who is Clarisse ?

A

Clarisse McClellan is an unusual young girl who lives next door to Montag. A seventeen-year-old she is, she influences montag into discovering the beauty of the world. She is also the catalyst that aids Montag in his search for himself. She is BRAVE.

25
Q

Mildred (Millie) is the protagonist’s wife, the one major character in the book who seems to have no hope of resolving the conflicts within herself. She is obsessed with watching television and refuses to be in a conversation with her husband about their marriage or her feelings. Her suicide attempt, clearly indicates that she suffers a great deal of pain. Narrow-minded and childish, Mildred does not understand her husband and apparently has no purpose in doing so. Her suicide attempt suggests that she is in great pain and that her obsession with television is a means to avoid confronting her life. Eventually, Mildred is overwhelmed by her husband’s discovery and dedication to books, reports his illegal activity and flees the house. She is a flat character.

Q

Who is Ray Bradbury ?

A

Ray Bradbury, American novelist, short story writer, essayist, playwright, screenwriter and poet, was born August 22, 1920 in Waukegan, Illinois. He graduated from a Los Angeles high school in 1938. Although his formal education ended there, he became a “student of life,” selling newspapers on L.A. street corners from 1938 to 1942, spending his nights in the public library and his days at the typewriter. He became a full-time writer in 1943, and contributed numerous short stories to periodicals before publishing a collection of them, Dark Carnival, in 1947.

His reputation as a writer of courage and vision was established with the publication of The Martian Chronicles in 1950, which describes the first attempts of Earth people to conquer and colonize Mars, and the unintended consequences. Next came The Illustrated Man and then, in 1953, Fahrenheit 451, which many consider to be Bradbury’s masterpiece, a scathing indictment of censorship set in a future world where the written word is forbidden. In an attempt to salvage their history and culture, a group of rebels memorize entire works of literature and philosophy as their books are burned by the totalitarian state. Other works include The October Country, Dandelion Wine, A Medicine for Melancholy, Something Wicked This Way Comes, I Sing the Body Electric!, Quicker Than the Eye, and Driving Blind. In all, Bradbury has published more than thirty books, close to 600 short stories, and numerous poems, essays, and plays. His short stories have appeared in more than 1,000 school curriculum “recommended reading” anthologies.
