4.5 Metallic bonding Flashcards
1
Q
Define delocalised electrons
A
e which are not fixed in one position
2
Q
Define metallic bond
A
METALLIC BOND: electrostatic attractions between lattice of metal cations and delocalised electrons
3
Q
What determines the strength of metallic bonding
A
- number of delocalised e
- charge of cation
- radius of cation
The more delocalised e and the smaller the radius - the stronger bonds
4
Q
Explain common metallic properties and their applications
A
5
Q
Define alloys
A
ALLOYS: metallic solutions conatining ore than on metal held by metallic bonding
Alloys have distinct properties because of different packing of atoms in lattice usually more chemically stable, stronger, resistant to corrosion
Examples:
steel = Fe + C + other
bronze = Cu + Sn
sterling silver = Ag + Cu
