What are the duties of the OV during animal transport?
- Responsible for ensuring that animals being transported are treated in accordance with animal welfare laws and regulations
When does OV must be present and doing what?
- During loading/unloading
- Random checks during the travel plan
- Perform checks at border controls
What conditions must be followed for animal/driver during transport?
- Animal should be fit for journey
- Safe loading and unloading
- Prevent fear/injury/suffering
- Only driven/handled by trained personnel
- No delay to destination
- Good floor area and height in transport
- Water, feed and rest offered in intervals
What documents must follow with animal during transport?
Cattle - passport
Sheep - paper with all animals identification nb
- Pig - only nb of pigs
Origin / owner / place / date / time of departure / destination / estimated duration
What are the requirements regarding vehicle?
Should be designed and constructed to:
- protect animal from weater, injury, suffering
- should be easy to clean
- absorbable bedding for young
- prevent escape
- enough space above head
- ventilation/air
- Bridges, ramps to unload/load -> should not be steeper than 20°C (26°C for ruminants)
- Dividers btw animals
- Anti-slip floor
- Lighting
What is required for vehicle in case of journeys over 8h?
- Ventilation
- Thermometer 5-30°C
- Navigation
- Removable dividers
- Windows
- Watering system
- Bedding comport
What must the vehicle be marked with on the outside?
A sign “ Live animals”
Who can drive the transport vehicle?
Only person with experience or specific training
What are requirements regarding the different animals transported for more than 8h?
- Pigs: max 24h, access to water
- Eq: max 24h, access to water, feed given every 8h
- Calves: 1h rest after 9h
- All others: after 14h, 1h break, water and feed.
What are requirments for animal after journey upon of arrival to SH?
Unloaded, fed, water and rest at least 24h
Which animals are not allowed for transport?
- Newborn with unhealed navel
- Pregnant animals or given birth previous week
- Animals with open wounds
Handling of animals: Separation / handling
Separated according:
- size
- age
- gender
- animals hostile towards others/hierarchy
Handling:
- Equids over 8m: halter (if not broken bones)
Handling of animals: Prohibited!
- Physical with animal
- Don’t tie horns / legs / muzzle on calves
- Prods with pointed ends; EXCEPT: on adult pigs or cattles for max 2sec, ONCE.
