36. Categorization, disposal and use of animal by-products not intended for human consumption Flashcards
What are the categories for animal by-products not intended for human consumption?
Category 1 - Highest level of hazard; whole bodues, all body parts.
Category 2 - Various animal by-products/manure
Category 3 - Everything that is not eaten from animals with no sign of disease
What is included to category 1
- TSE suspected/killed
- Pet/zoo/circus/experiment animals, and wild animals if suspected to be infected with transmissible disease
- Animals that have been submitted to illegal treatment
- By-products containing unsafe amounts of residues
- By-products collected during treatment of wastewater
What is included in category 2
- Manure, GIT content
- By-products during treatment of wastewater
- Substances or contaminants exceeding permitted levels
- Foreign bodies
- Imported from a 3rd country that fails to comply with EU legislation
- Animals killed but not intended for human consumption: fetuses, oocytes, embryos, semen, dead in shell poultry.
What is included in category 3
- Parts are fit for human consumption but not intended for it (commercial reasons)
- Rejected carcasses, heads of poultry, hides, skin, horn and feet, pig bristles, feathers, blood, bones, placenta, day old chickens
- Products without transmissible disease, no risk PM to public or animal health
How is category 1 by-products disposed and may be used for?
Disposed by:
● Incineration: 1350C directly or after pressure sterilization of SRM + marking. (Only option for TSE).
Other high risk materials ->
● Pressure sterilization, permanent marking, burial in authorized landfill
Used for:
● fuel for combustion with or without prior processing (no marking needed)
How is category 2 by-products disposed and may be used for?
Category 2 disposal options depend on risk level:
High-risk materials → Treated like Category 1 (incineration/pressure sterilization, landfill).
Medium-risk materials → Pressure sterilized + marking and repurposed (fertilizer, biogas).
Low-risk materials → Directly spread on land (manure, GIT, milk)
Used for:
● Fuel for combustion, fertilizer, composted or biogas
How is category 3 by-products disposed and may be used for?
Disposed by;
● As category 1 and 2
● Rendering (to produce meat and bone meal)
Processed into usable products (low risk, from healthy animals, fit but not intended for human consumption)
● Cosmetic, medical devices, veterinary medicinal products
● Composed or transformed into biogas, pet food (if not decomposed or spoiled), fertilizer (applied to land w/o processing), compost.
