4.5 CRUDE OIL Flashcards
what is crude oil?
a mixture of hydrocarbons
what are hydrocarbons?
compounds of hydrogen and carbon only
order of fractional distillation?
- Refinery gases
- Gasoline
- Kerosene
- Diesel
- Fuel oil
- Bitumen
what happens as boiling point increases down the fractional distillation column?
- the fractions get darker in colour
- the fractions get more viscous (like treacle)
- molecular mass increases
use of refinery gas:
fuel for home cooking
use of gasoline:
fuel for cars
use of kerosene:
fuel for aircraft
use of diesel:
fuel for trains
use of fuel oil:
fuel for ships
use of bitumen:
making roads
temperature at the top of the fractioning column:
cold
temperature at the bottom of the fractioning column:
hot
how does fractional distillation work?
- heated crude oil vapours enter the column
- vapours rise until they reach their boiling point, when they condense
- different vapours condense at different heights due to their different boiling points
- similar vapours condense together as a fraction
what is a fraction?
mixtures containing the hydrocarbons that boil in a particular temperature range
what is a fuel?
a substance which when burned, releases heat energy
