3.3 IONS Flashcards
1.37, 1.40, 2.20, 1.38, 1.39, 1.41
what happens to metal atoms when forming metal ions?
- lose all of their outer- shell electrons to get a full outer-shel
- they become positively charged ions and are more stable
what is oxidation?
the loss of electrons
why would an ion have a 2+ charge?
because it lost 2 electrons
what happens to non-metal atoms when forming non-metal ions?
- tend to gain electrons to fill their outer shell
- when they do this, they become negatively charged ions and are more stable
what is reduction?
gaining electrons
why would an ion have a 1- charge?
because it gained one electron
how do the charges work across the columns in the periodic table?
+1 +2 +3 NOTHING -3 -2 -1 NOTHING
what happens when metal and non-metal atoms react?
the metal atoms give electrons to the non-metal atoms
what diagrams are drawn to show ionic bonding?
dot and cross diagrams
what is the charge of Ag?
Ag+
what is the charge of Cu?
Cu 2+
what are the two charges of Fe?
Fe 2+ and Fe 3+
what is the charge of Pb?
Pb 2+
what is the charge of Zn?
Zn 2+
charge of hydrogen:
H+
