4.4 Manufacturing Processes Flashcards
What is design for manufacture (DfM)
The concept that designers will design to optimize the manufacturing process and make use of existing manufacturing capability
What are the additive manufacturing techniques?
Paper-based rapid prototyping
Laminated object manufacture (LOM)
Stereolithography
What are the subtractive manufacturing techniques?
Cutting
Machining
Turning
Abrading
What are the shaping techniques?
Molding
Thermoforming
Casting
Knitting
Weaving
What are the joining techniques?
Permanent joining techniques
Temporary joining techniques
Adhering
Fastening
Fusing
What is paper-based rapid prototyping?
Layers of paper and cut and glued together to create a 3D shape
What is laminated object manufacture (LOM)?
Layers of paper/plastic/metal cut and glued together to create a 3D shape
What is stereolithography?
An object is creating by curing thin layers of liquid resin with a laser
What is cutting?
The removal of a material into the desired shape using saws, scissors, or CNC machines
What is machining?
The removal of a material by a cutting tool which moves across the surface
What is turning?
The material is spinning on a horizontal axis while a cutting tool moves along the surface to remove material, creating a cylindrical shape
What is abrading?
The process of using an abrasive to grind/ rub away material
What is molding?
Heating a material until it is a liquid/ pliable state and placing it into a mold
What is injection molding?
Producing parts by injecting plastic into a mold, and as the material is cooled it takes the shape of the mold (producing very minimal waste)
What is thermoforming?
A plastic sheet is heated until it is in a pliable state then placed into a mold where vacuum forming in used
