3.5 Rapid Prototyping Flashcards
What is rapid prototyping?
The production of a physical model of a design using three-dimensional CAD models
How does Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) work?
“Additive” by laying down thin layers of plastic. Filament is heated in a nozzle and drawn on layer by layer (quite slow process)
How does Stereolithography (SLA) work?
“Additive” by curing liquid resin with a laser layer by layer
How does Laminated Object Manufacturing (LOM) work?
Layers of plastic, metal and paper are cut with a laser. The sliced layers are then glued on top of each other
How does Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) work?
“Additive” as a CO2 laser fuses powder layer by layer to create a 3D form
What are the advantages and disadvantages of rapid prototyping?
Reduced development time
Reduced costly mistakes (identifies errors before production)
Less waste (for additivie techniques)
Slow process
Not suited for large scale applications
