4.3 The heart Flashcards
Advantage of bypass surgery
-better long term outcomes
How many chambers does a heart have?
4
What do heart valves do?
Keep blood flowing in right direction
Whats the importance of the HEART VALVES in making the heart an effective pump?
Keep the blood flowing in the right direction
What is coronary heart disease?
narrowing of coronary arteries so blood can’t be pumped to heart muscle
(common cause= build up fatty material) RESULTS in heart attack/death
What is a stent? How does it work?
- Metal mesh placed in artery
- Tiny balloon inflated to open blood vessel and stent.
- Balloon removed and the stent stays in place
Stents can release drugs
Why is the muscle walls on the LEFT ventricle thicker?
-to allow the left ventricle to develop the pressure needed to force the blood through the arterial system all over the body.
What’s the importance of the CORONARY ARTERIES in making the heart an effective pump?
They supply the muscles with oxygen
Draw a flow chart to show how blood passes through the heart?
- vena cara⇒ right atrium⇒right ventricle⇒pulmonary artery⇒to lungs
- pulmonary vein⇒left atrium ⇒left ventricle⇒aorta
Disadvantage of bypass surgery? (5)
- Long recovery 6 weeks plus
- Risk bleeding from sight
- Heart rhythm problems
- blood clots
- EXPENSIVE
What does the atria do?
Contract together and force down blood into the ventricles
Disadvantages of taking statins?
- long term drug-need to take everyday therefore risk it might be forgotten.
- negative side effect - headache, kidney failure, memory loss, liver damage
- effect is instant takes time to kick in
What are the advantages of stents?
- only takes a few days to recover
- less invasive
-feel benefits immediately - prevents further damage to heart
improves symptoms - chest pain/breathlessness
Whats the importance of the thickened muscular wall of the left ventricle in making the heart an effective pump?
develops pressure needed to force the blood through the arterial system all over the body.
What are the disadvantages of stents? (5)
- Only last 4or 5 years
- bleeding/blood clots
- Side effects=heart attack/strokes
- Infection
- Allergic reaction to drugs or materials used
