4.3 Scalar & Vector Quantities Flashcards
What are scalar quantities?
Scalar quantities are just numbers - they simply tell you the ‘size’ (or ‘magnitude’) of the thing you’re measuring, and nothing more.
What are vector quantities?
Vector quantities tell you both the size of the thing AND its direction
How are arrows used to represent vectors?
The length of the arrow represents the magnitude and the way its pointing represents the direction
What are four different terms that can be used to describe an object’s motion?
- Distance
- Displacement
- Speed
- Velocity
What are three examples of scalar quantities?
- Temperature
- Speed
- Distance
What is velocity?
Velocity is speed of the object in a given direction
Is power a vector or a scalar quantity? Explain your answer.
Power is a scalar quantity because it only has a magnitude, it doesn’t have a direction
