2.1 Energy Stores & Systems Flashcards
What are the 8 different energy stores?
- Thermal
- Kinetic
- Gravitational potential
- Elastic
- Chemical
- Nuclear
- Electromagnetic
- Electrostatic
Describe how electromagnetic energy stores work
Two objects will have energy in this store if they exert a magnetic force on each other
Describe how electrostatic energy stores work
Two objects will have energy in this store if they exert an electrostatic force on each other
When is energy transferred?
Whenever a system changes. A system is just a fancy word for a single object (e.g. the air in a piston) or a group of objects (e.g. two colliding vehicles) that you’re interested in. A system can be changed by heating or by working
What are the 4 ways that energy can be transferred?
- Mechanically
- Electrically
- Radiation
- Heating (light or sound)
Describe how conduction works when transferring energy by heating
Conduction is where the vibrating particles of a substance transfer energy to neighbouring particles
What is meant by ‘a system’
A collection of matter (a group of objects)
Where is energy transferred?
Between objects or between different forms
How can an open system exchange energy?
The matter of a system can exchange energy with the ‘outside world’. An open system can lose or gain energy as it interacts with the outside world.
What is meant by ‘outside word’
All of the matter outside of the system
How is a closed system different from an open system?
A closed system is separate from the outside world so neither matter nor energy can enter or leave. Even though energy can be transferred within the system, the overall change is always 0.
